Cohen's 1960s' commedia dell'arte figures tended to plumb the tragic or agonistic potential of characters and situations. From the late 1970s his caricatures became more humorous. One reviewer commented: 'Here is a new line of free and easy drawings of characters like cartoons. You can't pass them without a chuckle'.
