Like Head (1948), Antwerp Model was also executed while Metzger was studying at the Kunstakademie under Gustav de Bruyne and shares its explicitly expressionist style. One of Metzger’s most arresting works of the period, it depicts a conventional seated female figure ‘transgressively transformed into something half animal’ [Andrew Wilson].
