As the Syrian crisis occupied our mass media with such terrible regularity from 2011 onwards, Panchal was reminded of a lone figure he had glimpsed, begging on the underground, the geometry of his composition recalling the anonymous architectural spaces of the tube network, criss-crossed with tunnels and passages, ticket halls and escalators.
