My heart will always reek of Deutschland: the life and work of Boris Lurie

11 January 2023

Boris Lurie was born in Leningrad and he and his father survived the camps during the Holocaust and immigrated to New York in 1946.

Lurie was his own man and his art was a derivative of his inner most feelings and social and political beliefs. In 1959 he established the No! Art movement with Sam Goodman and Stanley Fischer. The philosophy was to protest against war and nuclear arm armament through the visual arts. His life and career is extraordinary and although exhibiting and falling foul of the establishment his reputation grew in spite of refusing to sell a painting.
