Mati Basis was born in Tel Aviv in 1933. He studied at the Avni Institute of Art in Tel Aviv and the Hornsey and Chelsea Art Colleges in London and primarily works in photomontage and photo-etching. He had his first solo show of paintings in 1960 at the Tschemerinsky Art Gallery in Tel Aviv and his first show of prints at the Oxford Gallery in 1976. Basis first exhibited in London at the Margaret Fisher Gallery in 1978 and later at the National Theatre. He has been awarded the first prize for prints at the Tel Aviv Museum and his works are held in public collections in Israel, the USA, Holland, and in the UK. He lives and works in London.
