Ebenezer Challis was born in Essex, England on 12 December 1806. He was an engraver of landscapes and architecture, who specialised in interiors. He lived most of his life in London, where he was a member of the Royal Academy of Art and his engravings include 'Interior of a Polish Synagogue at the Moment when the Manuscript of the Law is Elevated', after a painting of the same name by Solomon Alexander Hart, the first Jewish Royal Academician. Ebenezer Challis died in London, England on 4 March 1881. His work is in UK collections including the British Museum and the V&A.
